Weeks of March 19th and March 26th, 2018

*Head Middle Magnet School was chosen as a pilot school of an on-line assessment that is being evaluated for use next year. Our 5th Grade ELA students will be taking the test on Tuesday during the first two blocks of the morning.

Students will review all three past writing prompts in the next few weeks as we proceed with readying for the upcoming TNREADY tests in April. Students will also complete and review another TNREADY Practice test(multiple choice/paper & pencil). Students are seeing first hand the types of texts and questions they will be tested on. Students are practicing analyzing the texts and questions, test taking strategies, and learning from their mistakes. Passing the TN READY tests will determine entry into Martin Luther King Magnet High School.

Students will also begin our class novel on the life of Steve Jobs, Thinking Differently.

Please ask your student to show you they completed their daily Edmodo assignment each Monday through Thursday. If your student is on Raz Kids, please ask them to show you they are using the program 2-3 times per week for 20-30 minutes.

Weeks of March 5th and 12th, 2018

March 12th week...Metro Schools 3rd Practice Opinion Essay Writing Benchmark this Wed. Students will be given 2 1/2 hours to read a text article, organize their positions(evidence), and write a 5-6 paragraph essay. Essays will be graded and scored by Head Middle Magnet teacher(s).

Students will also be practicing test taking strategies with a practice test later in the week.

Students will be writing an opinion essay on peaceful protests during the Civil Rights Era, using two texts for evidence. Our next Metro School's Practice Benchmark Writing Essay will be an opinion essay. Students are following a template that provides step by step modeling of successful essay writing.

We are also about to begin our next classroom novel on Steve Jobs. More to come.

Please ask your student to show you their daily Edmodo posted assignment each Monday through Thursday. Please monitor and confirm that they are keeping up with their practice work as TNREADY Spring tests are just around the corner.

Lastly, please ask your student to keep focused at school and make good choices regarding their behavior. My goal as teacher is to provide a safe learning environment for all.
