August 5th, 2019

Greetings!

I am so excited to be your teacher this year, as we travel together down this road to a better life. My parents were first generation american born citizens of Italian and Sicilian immigrant parents. Their parents came to this country in search of a better life for themselves and their children. Times were very hard economically for my immigrant grandparents. But they never lost hope and faith that their children and their children's children would live better lives. My parents worked hard to provide for themselves and my sister and me. They always said their wish and dream was that my sister and I would have better lives than them. After I became a parent, I finally understood what they meant. My promise to parents is that I will treat your students like they were my own children. My goal is to help your students reach my high expectations for a better life! And I will be on this road with your students, every step of the way.

My teaching philosophy can be summed up simply as, "SHOW RATHER THAN TELL!"

I mostly show students how to improve their reading comprehension, analyzing, and writing ability, by modeling, and a step by step instruction technique called "scaffolding the lesson."  We follow our district's Scope and Sequence of teaching standards in our various categories of informational text, fictional text, vocabulary, grammar, writing, speaking and listening.

In order to learn critical analysis, I first teach students how to form critical open ended questions as opposed to closed questions. Closed questions can be answered in few words and provide small details. For example, "Did the team win their championship game? The answer is probably yes or no. An open ended question is, "How did the team win their championship game?" The answer will be an explanation rather than yes or no.

Regarding teaching writing, I begin by teaching students how to analyze their writing prompt instructions and contrast the three types of essays: personal narratives, informational/explanatory, and persuasive/opinion essays. Students need to understand what they are being asked to write about.  Then we write, write, and write some more. As their teacher. I guide and encourage students' writing more than just evaluate and criticize.

Students will keep their daily class assignments in our class hanging folders and their composition books. Their folder and composition book will remain in their classroom, and will be shared with parents during student led parent conferences in November. Daily practice at home short assignments will be assigned Monday through Thursday on a web platform called, EDMODO. We will be using Edmodo shortly.

Come to our open house on August 20th and learn more. Thank you again for allowing us to teach your student.

Week of April 15th TNREADY TIME!

Tuesday April 16th  ELA Part One 80 Minutes (NO ELECTRONIC TECHNOLOGY DEVICES ARE PERMITTED DURING TESTING)

You will first read 1, 2, or 3 articles.
You will practice your 5 Magic Words quickly as you read. Write a brief note somewhere in your test booklet as you read. Who am I reading about? What? Where? When? How does it all turn out?
•After you read the articles, you will then read your prompt twice to learn what it is asking you to write.
Persuade(Opinion)…
Inform(Explain)…
Entertain(Narrative).
Follow the specific directions of your prompt.
Quickly plan your paragraphs. Create your specific graphic organizer.

 No more than 5-10 minutes

*Informational Essay prompts will ask you specifically to either summarize, identify specific details, explain a topic, or compare and contrast a topic from the two articles you have just read.

FIRST: Quickly draw a big circle in the middle with Mickey Mouse circle ears for text 1 and text 2 evidence. If it is compare and contrast, draw a Venn Diagram.

SECOND: Quickly draw 5 rectangular stacked boxes for your brief notes. You do not write your whole essay in your graphic organizers. Top box is first paragraph. Purpose Statement taken right from the prompt directions and short synopsis of topic. Then 2nd Paragraph first evidence, 3rd Paragraph second evidence, 4th Paragraph third evidence, and 5th Paragraph....Conclusion. ALWAYS USE SENTENCE STARTERS....The author stated...I read in the text...

THIRD: Begin writing as you would speak.

*Persuade or Opinion prompts will ask you to take ONE position. Only ONE position.

FIRST: Quickly draw a big circle in the middle with Mickey Mouse circle ears for text 1 and text 2 for evidence.

SECOND: Quickly draw 5 rectangular stacked boxes for your brief notes. You do not write your whole essay in your graphic organizers. Top box is first paragraph. Purpose Statement taken right from the prompt directions, state your opinion, and short synopsis of topic. Then 2nd Paragraph, first reason and evidence, 3rd Paragraph, 2nd reason and evidence, 4th Paragraph, 3rd reason and evidence, and 5th Conclusion. ALWAYS USE SENTENCE STARTERS....The author stated...I read in the text...

THIRD: Begin writing as you would speak.

*Narrative Essay  prompts will usually ask you to extend the story with the same story details and characters that you just read with your "dialogue." If the story you read was written in first person voice, you may have to write your extended story from that point of view. If the story was written in 3rd person(as if looking from above and not one character), then you may have to write from that point of view. REMEMBER TO READ THE PROMPT DIRECTIONS FOR INSTRUCTIONS ON WHAT TO WRITE!!!!!

FIRST: Quickly create 3 circles top to bottom of page. You do not write your whole essay in your graphic organizer.1st circle is for your ideas of the beginning of your story, 2nd circle is your ideas for the middle, 3rd circle is your ideas for your ending.

NEXT: Begin writing your story as you speak.

REMEMBER.....NO PURPOSE OF THIS ESSAY PARAGRAPH IS NEEDED FOR NARRATIVE ESSAYS!!!!

  • If you finish before time is up, go back and review your essay. There will be no reading, sleeping, drawing, or disturbing others during test.

April 17th to 18th Parts 2, 3, and 4

Multiple Choice Strategies:

  • Read carefully...practice 5 magic words as you read..WRITE IN YOUR BOOKLET..
  • Read each question twice.
  • Is the question asking you for one answer choice or two or more answer choices?
  • THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE BEING ASKED!!!!!!
  • GO BACK IN THE TEXT AND LOOK FOR CLUES!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Use POE....eliminate wrong answers first, WRITE IN YOUR BOOKLET.
